Documents with an apostille

In addition to the translation, you can order an apostilled document. Apostille of documents accelerates their legalization. If the document is certified with an apostille, its validity is recognized in all the other countries that participate in the convention, without any additional formalities. Starting with January 1, 2010,  public documents in Estonia can be certified with an apostille by all notaries.

At the International Conference on Private Law the convention on cancellation of the requirement for legalization of public documents was signed in Hague in 1961. It was also decided to use simple procedure: certification of the document with an apostille. Specific form of the apostille is provided in the Convention on the Apostille: a form with specific data, which verifies the authenticity of the document.

An apostille is needed for  all public documents, e.g. school certificates, vital statistics office’s or other state institutions' certificates , notarial documents (notarized copies, letters of attorney, etc.), and translations made by sworn translators.

An apostille is not needed when:

  • The Estonian document is used in the countries Estonia has mutual legal assistance treaty with – Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland.
  • The document does no need an apostille if you received a definite answer of the appropriate foreign institution that your documents will be accepted there without the apostille.
